Portia passed away on September 13th, 2005 after a six-week battle with mammary adenocarcinoma. We had discovered lumps in Portia's abdomen while playing with her which were removed a week later. We were saddened to learn the cancer had already spread throughout her body. It took her very quickly. 25% of all female dogs develop mammary lumps at some point in their life, however a very small percentage are metastatic cancer. Portia was one of the unlucky ones...
Breast cancer in dogs is caused by the same hormonal mechanisims as in humans. All research toward the cure of breast cancer benefits both humans and dogs.
While her time with us was far, far too
short, we feel privileged to live with such a regal and loving
dog. Portia will be best rememered for her "yodeling" instead
of barking - that unmistakable howel of pleasure or demand that
made everyone snap-to-it. She will also be remembered through her
wonderful puppies who live in loving homes.
Our grief is slightly lessened knowing she was able to make such
a contribution to so many people's happiness in her short lifetime.
Portia's absence has been like losing three dogs - the greatness
of her personality and her presence in our lives will not be forgotton. |
